It started as a movement of sorts. How did Jefferson County get into this much debt. First there were mandated sewer improvements, followed by plans to go underneath the Cahaba River which proved too expensive and could be harmful to the environment. These plans were abandoned while the county commission refinanced, and refinanced, and refinanced until the debt ballooned.
So here we are on the brink of bankruptcy, credit rating in the sewer and no real plan to get us out of this poop! Thus jeffcocrap.com was formed to have some fun and in the process give portions of our proceeds to help pay down the princpal on the sewer debt.
About the Name ...
Many people in the news media have been careful regarding the use "crap" in our name and rightfully so. The word crap has been defined as cast off or waste and was later adapted in the United States to mean biological waste and was crass.
In the 1800's a man by the name of Thomas Crapper took the newly invented toilet to a new level making beautiful porcelin fixtures for flushing away human waste. Coincidently part of his name "crap" was already slang in America, but not so in England.
Crapper made toilets for Prince Edward and he was flush with business. Because Thomas Crapper was dedicated to creativity in the disposal of our most unseemly by-product, we wanted this site to represent a unique way of dealing with the smelly financial mess we face in Jefferson County.
Crapper's company lost market share and was sold in the last few years to a company that is trying to recapture the style and energy he put into making the bathroom a more elegant experience.
